Drugs are substances which affect the brain and the body. Various drugs are known to have diverse effects. Some of these effects affect the health of an individual and they do not leave. However, they can be managed proficiently. Often times, drug addiction starts off as drug abuse. This occurs when a person takes drugs more than the required amount in order to achieve a heightened effect.
Now, this heightened effect causes a pleasure feeling in the brain, and for this feeling to remain constant, the individual would have to take more of the drug, hence resulting in an addiction.
Drug addiction is linked with a variety of both long and short-term health effects, and they differ depending on the nature of the drug, the quantity, the frequency of consumption, and the person’s health. The effects of drug addiction have a far-reaching influence, as they can adversely affect the organs in the body.
For instance, the immune system could be affected. This means that the body will not be strong enough to fight off diseases, hence, the individual would most likely come down with any illness. Heart problems could also set in, the heart could beat beyond normal, the blood vessels such as the arteries and veins could become impaired, and eventually dysfunctional which could cause death.
Abdominal pain and Nausea could also occur; the liver could be affected thereby putting the individual at a big risk; seizures could set in; memory loss and a host of others.
Drug addiction also causes various behavioral issues which exists both in the long-term and in the short-term, and they include:
- No self-control
- Aggressiveness
- Paranoia
- Acting on impulse
- Affected judgment
These effects which drug addiction comes with, could have dire consequences such as accidents, serious injuries which could lead to death. In addition to this, drug addiction also affects our personal lives, it causes strains in relationships, it makes the individual unable to focus at work.
For college students who are addicted to drugs, they find it hard to focus well, and hence, their academic ability is impaired.
